How it works

Six steps from paperwork to wedding day.

We help you reach the Danish authorities prepared, with the right documents in the right order.

  1. 01

    Tell us about your situation

Nationalities, residence, previous marriages, shared children, the details that change which documents you need.

  2. 02

    Receive a document checklist

A clear list tailored to your case, with notes on translations, apostille and legalisation where relevant.

  3. 03

    Prepare your application

We review your application for completeness before it is submitted to Familieretshuset.

  4. 04

    Receive your marriage approval

Once your application is complete, Familieretshuset reviews it and issues your approval to marry.

  5. 05

    Find a wedding date together

We talk through the options and alternatives for your wedding date. The exact date depends on the municipality, so we help you find one that works.

  6. 06

    Marry and receive your certificate

After your civil ceremony, international couples receive an international marriage certificate, translated into five languages: Danish, English, German, Spanish and French.

From documents to date

A clearer route from checklist to approved wedding date.

We turn the practical parts into a structured sequence: what you need, what may need translation or apostille, what should be checked before submission, and when it makes sense to choose a municipality.

The goal is not more paperwork. It is fewer surprises before Familieretshuset reviews your application.

Why Denmark

A straightforward legal route to marriage in Europe.

Denmark is one of the most straightforward countries in Europe for international civil marriage. Fewer documents are typically required than in many jurisdictions, processing is measured in working days rather than months, and the result is a full legal marriage. Within the EU it is recognised by treaty; to use your certificate elsewhere, an apostille and translation may be needed, depending on the country where you present it.

No long residency requirement, no banns or church notices, no in-person interview before the wedding day. For couples with different nationalities, Denmark removes the bureaucratic friction that often makes marrying at home impractical.

Everyone is welcome

Marriage in Denmark is open to every couple.

Danish marriage law applies the same way to every couple, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion or background. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012, and civil ceremonies are conducted by municipal officials with no religious requirement.

We support couples of any nationality combination — including non-EU partners, couples from countries where their marriage would otherwise be blocked, and LGBTQ+ couples seeking a marriage that is legally recognised abroad.

FAQ

Questions couples ask before they start.

What documents do we need to marry in Denmark?

A valid passport for each partner, proof of legal residence, and proof that you are both free to marry. Couples who have been married before will need divorce or death certificates. Documents from outside Denmark often need translation and an apostille. We send you a checklist tailored to your nationalities and history.

How long does the application take?

Complete applications submitted to Familieretshuset are typically processed in around 5 working days. Incomplete applications restart the clock, which is why we review yours before it is submitted.

How much does it cost?

The official Danish application fee is DKK 2.100, paid directly to Familieretshuset. SimpleMarriage charges a separate, transparent service fee for guidance, the document checklist and application review. Municipalities may charge a small ceremony fee on top.

Will our marriage be recognised in our home country?

A Danish civil marriage is a full legal marriage, recognised across the EU by treaty. To use it elsewhere, you present your Danish marriage certificate, which can be apostilled and translated; whether any further step is needed depends on the country and authority where you use it. The Apostille Convention authenticates the certificate itself, not the marriage. A multilingual certificate is available on request, and we can point you to the right authority. We do not give immigration or legal advice.

Can same-sex couples marry in Denmark?

Yes. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Denmark since 2012 and follows the exact same process and recognition rules as any other civil marriage.

Do we need to live in Denmark, or just travel there?

You do not need to live in Denmark and there is no residency requirement. Most international couples travel to Denmark only for the civil ceremony; the application and documents are prepared beforehand. Both partners do need to be present on the wedding day.

Do we need witnesses at the ceremony?

Yes. A Danish civil marriage requires two witnesses present at the ceremony. You can bring your own, and in many municipalities witnesses can be arranged locally. Any adult who can show valid identification can act as a witness.

Is SimpleMarriage an official or government service?

No. SimpleMarriage is an independent service that helps you prepare and organise your application. The marriage is decided and performed by the Danish authorities: Familieretshuset assesses the application and a municipality conducts the ceremony. We are not a law firm, we do not submit on your behalf, and we do not give legal or immigration advice.
